Cologne solar project: Unique 18 MW Initiative Impresses

A landmark collaboration between petroleum additives manufacturer Deutsche Infineum and regional utility RheinEnergie AG is set to redefine urban renewable energy in Cologne, Germany. The two entities have announced plans to construct a formidable 18-megawatt (MW) ground-mounted solar park, positioning it as one of the largest inner-city photovoltaic projects in the country and a powerful symbol of Germany’s energy transition.

The ambitious project will utilize approximately 12 hectares of industrial land at Infineum’s facility on Neusser Landstraße. This area will be transformed into a clean energy powerhouse, hosting around 25,300 high-efficiency solar modules, each with a rated output of 710 watts. Once operational, this installation is projected to generate roughly 18 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green electricity each year.

This substantial energy output will follow a dual-purpose strategy. A significant portion will directly power Infineum’s manufacturing processes, while the surplus electricity will be integrated into the local grid. Projections show this excess energy is sufficient to cover the annual electricity needs of approximately 6,500 households in Cologne, seamlessly linking industrial decarbonization with community benefit.

Fulfilling Ambitious Climate Goals with Solar Power

For Infineum, this solar park is a critical component of its corporate sustainability vision. The initiative is a major step toward achieving the company’s goal of a 50% reduction in its scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The Cologne project alone is expected to curtail the site’s annual CO₂ emissions by as much as 6,500 tonnes, bolstering its environmental credentials and long-term competitiveness. For its part, RheinEnergie’s involvement underscores its dedication to advancing Cologne’s climate protection targets. Slated for commissioning in 2027, this joint venture serves as a compelling model for how industrial leaders and energy providers can forge partnerships to drive meaningful environmental progress.
