A new benchmark for environmental education has been set in Cairo with the launch of the “Green Schools for a Sustainable Future” initiative. Spearheaded by First Abu Dhabi Bank Misr (FABMISR), this pioneering project is a collaborative effort with Egypt’s Ministry of Education and Technical Education and the Ain El Bee’ah Association. The Asmaa Secondary School for Girls in the Maadi Educational Administration has been selected as the pilot site for this transformative program, which aims to embed sustainability directly into the learning environment.
Solar-powered greywater recycling at the core
At the core of the initiative is a sophisticated, solar-powered greywater treatment unit. This system captures and recycles used water from the school, providing a sustainable source for irrigating newly planted green spaces on the grounds. This practical application of renewable energy serves as a living lesson in resource conservation. Complementing the water recycling system are dedicated units for segregating organic and solid waste, promoting a circular economy within the school and significantly reducing its carbon footprint.
Greener campus environment and temperature reduction
Beyond the technological installations, the project focuses on tangible improvements to the school’s ecosystem. The introduction of new trees and green areas, sustained by the recycled water, is expected to lower ambient temperatures on campus by 4-5°C. This measure directly combats the urban heat island effect, creating a more comfortable and healthier atmosphere for students and staff. The initiative is not just about infrastructure; it’s about creating a sustainable micro-environment that enhances the educational experience.

3,500 students and 150 teachers engaged
The program’s impact extends deep into the curriculum and school culture, directly engaging 3,500 students and 150 teachers. Through comprehensive awareness campaigns and educational activities, the initiative seeks to cultivate a profound sense of environmental responsibility. The goal is to instill lasting sustainable habits and empower the school community to become active participants in environmental protection, making them advocates for a greener future.
Alignment with Egypt Vision 2030 and UN SDGs
This initiative is a powerful demonstration of FABMISR’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. Ahmed Mamdouh Hassan of FABMISR noted that the project aligns seamlessly with major strategic frameworks, including Egypt Vision 2030, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and the national “Go Green” initiative. By creating a scalable and effective model, this collaboration between finance, education, and environmental organizations serves as an inspiring blueprint for future projects, showcasing how targeted investments can generate lasting value for both the community and the planet.
