Serbia’s Hemofarm Launches Large-Scale Rooftop Solar Project
In a significant move towards corporate sustainability and renewable energy adoption in Serbia, pharmaceutical company Hemofarm has officially commissioned a 4 MW rooftop solar power plant at its production complex in Vršac. This installation stands as one of the largest of its kind in the country, showcasing a major investment in green energy by a leading industrial player.
A Landmark Investment: Hemofarm Rooftop Solar
The ambitious project, valued at €3 million, represents a substantial commitment to reducing the company’s carbon footprint. Spanning an impressive 21,000 square meters across the rooftops of 15 buildings, the facility is equipped with approximately 8,000 solar panels.
This new solar plant is projected to generate 5 million kWh of electricity annually. According to Hemofarm, this output will cover about 12% of the VrÅ¡ac site’s average electricity needs. During the sunny summer months, the plant’s contribution is expected to be even more significant, potentially supplying up to 50% of the facility’s power consumption during peak periods. To put this in perspective, the VrÅ¡ac complex consumed 40.1 million kWh in 2024.
Vladan Stanojević, the site manager, highlighted that the primary goal of the plant is self-consumption. This strategy will help stabilize energy costs and decrease reliance on the national grid, providing a more predictable and sustainable energy supply for their operations.
Decarbonization and Strategic Vision with Hemofarm Rooftop Solar
This solar initiative is a key component of Hemofarm’s broader decarbonization strategy, which aligns with the environmental goals of its parent company, the STADA Group. The project involved not only the installation of panels but also necessary roof reinforcements and the implementation of an advanced monitoring system to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
While a major achievement, Hemofarm’s facility joins a growing list of large-scale corporate solar projects in Serbia. For comparison, the country’s largest rooftop photovoltaic system is a 9 MW installation by PeÅ¡tan, followed by a 6 MW facility operated by Henkel. Hemofarm’s 4 MW plant firmly places it among the top corporate adopters of solar energy in the nation, signaling a positive trend for the future of renewables in Serbia’s industrial sector.
