NTPC Khavda Solar Plant: 168MW Capacity Commissioned
In a significant step towards bolstering India’s renewable energy capacity, state-owned power giant NTPC has announced the successful commissioning of 168.02 MW of solar power capacity at its Khavda projects in Gujarat. The commercial operations for this new capacity officially commenced on March 31, 2026, marking another milestone in the company’s green energy expansion.
The newly commissioned capacity comes from two distinct projects managed by NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd (NREL), a subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy. This development is part of the massive solar park being developed in the Khavda region, a key hub for India’s solar ambitions.
A Breakdown of the New Capacity
The 168.02 MW addition is strategically divided between two major ongoing projects:
- Khavda-I Solar PV Project: A 78.02 MW portion represents the twelfth and final installment of the larger 1,255 MW project.
- Khavda-II Solar PV Project: A 90 MW portion marks the sixth installment of the 1,200 MW project.
This latest commissioning is part of a consistent and rapid expansion by NTPC in the region, following the addition of 165 MW and 270 MW at the Khavda-II project in February and March 2026, respectively.
Impact on NTPC’s Total Capacity
This latest addition significantly boosts the overall installed and commercial capacity of both NTPC Green Energy and the parent NTPC Group.
With this commissioning, the NTPC Green Energy Group’s commercial capacity has risen to 9,907.68 MW, with its total installed capacity now standing at 10,075.70 MW.
For the wider NTPC Group, the total installed capacity has reached 89,057 MW, while the total commercial capacity now stands at 87,977 MW. This continuous growth underscores NTPC’s pivotal role in transitioning India towards a more sustainable energy mix and achieving its ambitious renewable energy targets. The start of the commercial electricity supply from these new units was widely confirmed on April 1, 2026.
