Lithuania has taken a significant step toward its renewable energy goals with the official inauguration of its largest solar park. The 100 MW Moletai Solar Park, developed by the Danish company Nordic Solar, was launched on May 2, 2024, in the country’s Molėtai region. This landmark project is poised to generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 28,000 European households annually.
Spanning a vast 150-hectare site, the facility is equipped with over 150,000 advanced bifacial solar panels. These double-sided modules enhance energy production by capturing sunlight from both sides, leveraging the hilly terrain of Molėtai. The entire 100 MW output from the park has been secured through a power purchase agreement with Enefit, a subsidiary of the Eesti Energia Group.
The project represents a major contribution to Lithuania’s National Energy Independence Strategy, which aims to source all electricity from local renewable sources. The facility was successfully connected to the national grid in April 2024 in collaboration with transmission system operator Litgrid, an event confirmed by industry sources. Deputy Minister of Energy Daiva Garbaliauskaitė commented on the milestone, stating, “To achieve total energy independence, Lithuania has set lofty energy targets… We are making every effort to establish a high-value, sustainable energy sector as we work toward this goal.”
This single project boosts Lithuania’s total installed solar PV capacity by approximately 9%. The nation is rapidly scaling its ambitions, having raised its 2030 installation target in its revised National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) from 0.8 GW to 5.1 GW. The long-term strategy envisions reaching 9 GW of installed solar power by 2050, highlighting the growing momentum for renewables across the Baltics.

For Nordic Solar, this park marks a significant entry into a key European market. CEO Nikolaj Holtet Hoff emphasized Lithuania’s strategic importance, saying, “Lithuania is an important market for us to enter as it is an EU and Euro country, and we see beneficial synergy between the demand for more renewable energy… and our approach.” This commitment is more than a one-time investment; the company is already constructing an 80 MWp project and plans another major development for 2026-2027, signaling its confidence in the region’s green transition.
