Impressive SRP solar energy plan to power 600,000 homes by 2034
On May 5, 2026, Arizona utility Salt River Project (SRP) unveiled a landmark agreement with NextEra Energy Resources, securing a massive 3,000 megawatts (3 GW) of new solar energy. This strategic partnership is set to deliver enough clean electricity to power approximately 600,000 average homes by the time the project is fully operational in 2034.
The development will be executed in a phased approach, with NextEra Energy constructing 500 MW of new solar capacity each year over a six-year period from 2029 through 2034. SRP will purchase the power generated from these new facilities to serve its customers across the region, marking a significant step in bolstering its renewable energy portfolio.
This 3 GW solar initiative is a critical component of SRP’s long-term energy strategy. The utility aims to more than double its total power system capacity by 2035 to meet Arizona’s rapidly growing energy needs. The agreement underscores SRP’s commitment to a sustainable energy future, balancing the critical objectives of grid reliability, customer affordability, and environmental responsibility.
By systematically integrating large-scale solar power, SRP is proactively addressing future demand while significantly advancing its clean energy goals, positioning the utility as a key player in the Southwest’s transition to a more sustainable power grid.
