SRP to Power 600,000 Homes with Major Solar Expansion
Salt River Project (SRP) has announced a significant step forward in its commitment to renewable energy, unveiling a new agreement that will generate enough solar power for approximately 600,000 homes by 2034. This landmark initiative marks a major expansion of clean energy resources for the Arizona utility.
A Landmark SRP solar energy Agreement
At the heart of this expansion is a new agreement with NextEra Energy. The collaboration will lead to the development of solar plants capable of producing a total of 3,000 megawatts of energy. According to the plan, construction on these new facilities is set to begin in 2029, with SRP purchasing the power output to serve its growing customer base.
This project is a key component of SRP’s broader energy strategy. The utility plans to add 500 megawatts of solar capacity each year as it works to more than double its current generating capacity of around 12,000 megawatts over the next decade.
Meeting Arizona’s Growing Energy Demand
The move is a direct response to the increasing demand for power in the region. Bill McClellan, SRP’s director of resource acquisition, highlighted that this strategic expansion is crucial for continuing to provide reliable service to customers. By investing heavily in solar, SRP is not only scaling its resources but also significantly increasing the proportion of clean energy in its portfolio.
While the agreement represents a massive commitment to solar infrastructure, the final cost of the power purchases from NextEra has not yet been finalized. This initiative positions SRP as a leader in the transition to sustainable energy, ensuring a cleaner and more resilient power grid for future generations in Arizona.
