Meridian Energy Gains Consent for 120MW Bunnythorpe Solar Farm in New Zealand
MANAWATŪ, NEW ZEALAND – Meridian Energy has cleared a major regulatory hurdle for its latest renewable energy project, securing consent for the development of the 120 MW Bunnythorpe Solar Farm in New Zealand’s Manawatū region.
The project, confirmed around May 15, is a significant step in expanding the country’s solar generation capacity. A key feature of the Bunnythorpe development is its integrated design; the 120 MW solar array will be co-located with a battery storage system, creating what sources describe as a versatile “solar-plus-storage energy park.”
This hybrid model allows the facility to not only generate clean energy during daylight hours but also to store and dispatch that power when it is most needed, enhancing grid stability. The inclusion of energy storage aligns with a growing trend in the country’s energy sector, as New Zealand looks to firm up its renewable supply with technologies like large-scale batteries. The development of robust New Zealand battery storage infrastructure is seen as critical for accommodating more intermittent renewables like solar and wind.
With consent now granted, Meridian Energy can move forward with the next phases of project planning and development for the Bunnythorpe site. This approval marks another milestone for solar power in New Zealand, underscoring the technology’s growing role in the nation’s energy transition.
