India Solar Manufacturing Capacity Doubles in 2026 Amid PLI Scheme Success
NEW DELHI – India installed a record 15.3 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity in the first quarter of 2026, a 143% increase from the same period in the previous year, according to data from market research firm Mercom. The quarterly addition is the highest on record for the nation and supports a significant expansion of domestic manufacturing.

This surge in installations accompanies growth in India’s solar manufacturing sector. The country has developed substantial module manufacturing capacity, driven by government policies aimed at increasing self-reliance, Mercom India reported.
Company-level ambitions reflect this industry-wide trend. Inox Clean Energy announced it is targeting 11 GW of integrated solar manufacturing capacity by the fiscal year 2028. This push for local production is part of a broader effort, which includes milestones like the India FDRE project, as manufacturers scale up to meet domestic demand.
Government policies such as the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) are a key factor in the manufacturing growth. The implementation of ALMM List-II for solar cells, effective from June 2026, is expected to further stimulate domestic cell production to bridge existing supply gaps, according to industry analysis.
