Jordan Initiates Tender for Solar System Installation in 40 Municipalities

In a significant step toward renewable energy adoption, Jordan’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has launched tenders to install solar energy systems in 40 municipalities across the Mafraq, Irbid, Jerash, and Ajloun provinces. These contracts cover the planning, supply, installation, operation, and maintenance of the new systems.

The ministry will announce the bid closing date for the 23rd of next month and encourages interested parties to participate in the tender process.

The project’s first phase, completed last year, retrofitted 30 municipal buildings across various provinces with solar energy systems. This initial stage cost half a million Jordanian dinars and added a capacity of 570 kilowatts.

The second phase, currently underway, aims to install solar energy systems in 70 municipalities with a total capacity of up to 2,850 kilowatts. Installations will take place across 144 buildings, with separate tenders for each region.

The ministry estimates these solar energy systems will save municipalities significant resources annually, including:

  • Energy Savings: Over 1,150 megawatt-hours of electricity.
  • Cost Savings: Approximately 245,000 Jordanian dinars (about $350,000).
  • Emissions Reduction: Nearly 527 tons of carbon dioxide.

The total cost of implementing these systems, including capacity-building workshops for municipal employees, is estimated at 1 million Jordanian dinars. The ultimate goal is to equip 100 municipalities across the kingdom with a total capacity of 3.6 megawatts at an overall cost of 3.6 million Jordanian dinars.

This project demonstrates Jordan’s commitment to green growth and harnessing renewable energy, particularly solar power. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions and decreasing reliance on fossil fuels, the initiative directly supports the country’s sustainable development goals.

Impact of Solar Energy on Municipalities

Installing solar energy systems on municipal buildings in Jordan is a key component of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote renewable energy.

This initiative is expected to have a significant impact on the selected municipalities by lowering their electricity consumption and environmental footprint. The substantial cost reductions will enable local governments to allocate more funds toward essential public services and community development.

Local Capacity Development

Beyond the environmental and financial benefits, installing these solar energy systems also builds local capacity and enhances the skills of municipal employees. Through dedicated training during the project’s implementation, local staff will acquire the knowledge needed to operate and maintain the new systems.

By providing hands-on experience, these projects empower local staff with valuable skills in renewable energy technologies. This fosters innovation and strengthens Jordan’s capacity to adopt and implement advanced solutions across various sectors.

This collaborative effort between the central government, local institutions, and international partners promotes green, cost-effective sustainable development while creating local employment opportunities.
