Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has initiated a groundbreaking project in Telangana by issuing a tender for the region’s first solar Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This pioneering initiative will be integrated with the company’s existing 28 MW Mandamarri solar facility in the Mancherial district, marking a significant step towards modernizing the state’s energy infrastructure.
The pilot project specifies a 1 MW storage system with a 2.5 MWh discharge capacity, designed to store surplus solar power generated during peak daylight hours. This stored energy will be dispatched to the grid during the night or as needed, a strategy aimed at reducing grid losses, lowering energy costs, and enhancing overall grid stability. The system is set to power 11 underground mines, four open-cast mines, and various industrial areas in the Mandamarri and Srirampur regions.
Valued at an estimated ₹5 crore (approximately ₹50 million), the tender covers a comprehensive scope that includes the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the BESS. Crucially, the contract also mandates a ten-year operations and maintenance agreement, ensuring long-term performance and reliability. SCCL projects that this single unit will generate monthly savings of around ₹13 lakh, translating to an annual saving of ₹1.6 crore. The success of this pilot could pave the way for two additional 1 MW units in the future.
The call for bids was officially announced on May 28, 2024, with a submission deadline of June 18, 2024. Prospective bidders were required to provide an Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) of ₹5 lakhs. This venture underscores SCCL’s commitment to adopting advanced energy solutions and supports Telangana’s broader goals for renewable energy adoption. Detailed specifications and requirements for this landmark project are available in the official tender documentation.
This initiative aligns perfectly with Telangana’s ambitious Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage (EVES) Policy 2020-2030, which aims to foster a robust ecosystem for sustainable energy solutions. By spearheading the integration of BESS technology, SCCL is not only optimizing its own energy consumption but also contributing to Telangana’s position as a leader in India’s clean energy transition.
