PLN Solar Expansion Goals
PT PLN (Persero) plans to expand its solar capacity by approximately 5.2 gigawatt-peak (GWp) and introduce 8.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage as part of President Prabowo Subianto’s 100-gigawatt solar power program. This initiative aims to enhance the electricity supply in South Sulawesi, providing additional generation sources that do not rely on hydropower.
Addressing Hydropower Shortfalls in PLN Solar Expansion
The expansion is a response to recent reductions in hydropower generation due to the El Niño weather phenomenon, which has cut hydropower capacity in South Sulawesi by 600 megawatts (MW). The addition of solar energy and battery systems will serve as a buffer during periods when hydropower output declines.
