L&T Secures Landmark Order for 185 MW Solar Plant in Bihar

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a landmark order to build a 185 MW solar power plant in Bihar, marking a significant milestone in the company’s renewable energy endeavors. The project, awarded to L&T’s Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) division, will also include a 254 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), showcasing the firm’s expertise in integrated Larsen & Toubro solar battery storage solutions.

Transforming Bihar’s Energy Landscape with Renewable Solutions

This ambitious initiative underscores L&T’s commitment to advancing India’s clean energy transition while addressing the growing energy demands of Bihar. The new solar power plant will be developed in Kajra, located in the Lakshisarai district of Bihar.

The project is expected to play a critical role in the state’s renewable energy strategy, aiming to meet the population’s rising energy needs while contributing to the national agenda of combating climate change. By integrating advanced solar and energy storage technologies, the project will help stabilize the grid and ensure a reliable, sustainable energy supply for the region.

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a key component that will store excess energy generated by the solar plant during low-demand periods and release it during peak times. This capability will enhance grid stability by providing essential services like frequency regulation and voltage support. It will also offer black-start capability—the ability to restart the grid after an outage—bolstering Bihar’s overall grid resilience.

Expanding L&T’s Renewable Energy Portfolio and Expertise

This project expands L&T PT&D’s extensive portfolio of renewable energy projects, cementing its position as a leading Bihar solar company for large-scale developments. The company’s portfolio now includes over 18 GWp of solar and wind generation capacity, both commissioned and under construction, alongside over 1.5 GWh of storage in Battery Energy Storage Systems.

The Senior Vice President and Head of the Renewable Strategic Business Group at L&T PT&D emphasized the significance of this project: “Our experience in handling large-scale renewable projects and energy storage systems positions us as the preferred EPC partner for developers across various geographies. This project in Bihar is a testament to our commitment to delivering sustainable and innovative energy solutions.”

The order for the Bihar solar plant is expected to significantly boost L&T’s intake for the year, reflecting the company’s strong growth in the renewable energy sector. Analysts, including Amit Anwani from Prabhudas Lilladher Pvt Ltd, note that this order alone could substantially increase L&T’s year-to-date order intake, which is projected to be between Rs. 55 billion and Rs. 125 billion.

A Bright Future for Renewable Energy in India

L&T’s focus on renewable energy aligns with India’s broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and increasing the share of renewables in the national energy mix. The 185 MW solar plant in Bihar, combined with the 254 MWh Battery Energy Storage System, represents a major step toward achieving these objectives.

The project not only addresses Bihar’s immediate energy needs but also contributes to the long-term sustainability of India’s energy infrastructure. As the country continues to expand its renewable capacity, L&T’s role as a leading player in the sector is expected to grow. The company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability positions it at the forefront of India’s energy transition.

L&T’s latest order in Bihar, combining a 185 MW solar plant with a state-of-the-art Battery Energy Storage System, underscores the company’s dedication to advancing renewable energy in India. By enhancing Bihar’s energy security and contributing to national climate goals, this project solidifies L&T’s role as a key player in the sustainable development of India’s energy sector and sets a benchmark for future projects in the region.
