Spanish renewable energy company Ecoener is developing two major solar plants in Guatemala, Yolanda and El Carrizo, with capacities of 74 MW and 75 MW, respectively. Situated in the Escuintla department along the country’s southern coast, these projects represent a significant step in the nation’s push to expand its renewable energy capacity and promote sustainable development.
Ecoener Secures $64M Green Loan for Yolanda Solar Plant
Ecoener has secured $64 million in green bond financing from BAC Financial Group and the Dutch public development bank FMO for the Yolanda solar plant, a 74 MW facility in the southern department of Escuintla. The project includes a 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and is expected to generate 165 GWh of electricity annually. Nearby, Ecoener is also building a second solar PV plant, El Carrizo, with a capacity of 75 MW.
The company, which has a current asset portfolio of 740 MW, aims to have 1,000 MW in operation and under construction by 2025. This dedication to renewable energy development reflects Ecoener’s vision for sustainable growth and environmental responsibility.
Enerland Group Expands into Guatemala with 66 MWp Solar Park
Enerland Group has also announced its expansion into Guatemala, with plans to establish a local headquarters and build its first photovoltaic park, Magdalena Solar. Scheduled for completion in mid-2025, the 66 MWp Magdalena Solar park will further enhance the country’s renewable energy capacity.
Despite previous investments—including a 5 MW project announced in 2014 and a cancelled 110 MW tender in 2019—Guatemala’s installed photovoltaic capacity stands at just 110 MW, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
The construction of Ecoener’s Yolanda and El Carrizo plants highlights the growing momentum behind renewable energy projects in Guatemala. With investments from domestic and international companies alike, the country is poised to enhance its renewable energy infrastructure and support global climate change mitigation efforts.
