Zacapa Solar Capacity to Double by 2028: A Stunning Expansion Plan

In a significant move to bolster its renewable energy portfolio, Kruger Energy announced on March 18, 2025, a comprehensive plan to double the capacity of its Zacapa Solar facility located in Rio Hondo, Guatemala. The ambitious project, slated for completion by 2028, will see the plant’s output increase from its current 9 MW to a total of 18 MW.

The expansion will be executed in two distinct phases, centered on the installation of 20,000 new solar panels. This will bring the facility’s total count from 20,544 to 40,544 panels, substantially increasing its physical footprint and power generation potential. This strategic investment underscores a strong commitment to scaling up clean energy infrastructure in the region.

As a direct result of this upgrade, the Zacapa facility’s annual renewable energy generation is projected to more than double, rising from 16 GWh to 32.4 GWh. This enhanced output will play a crucial role in providing clean, reliable electricity and advancing Guatemala’s sustainable energy objectives. The expansion solidifies the Zacapa project as a key contributor to the nation’s energy grid and a benchmark for future renewable developments.
