Oman is accelerating its transition to clean energy with the introduction of the Ibri 3 Solar Power Project, a 500 MW facility located in the Al Dhahirah Governorate. This initiative is the latest in a strategic series of large-scale solar developments designed to diversify the Sultanate’s energy portfolio and address escalating electricity needs.
The project, which will also feature a 100 MWh battery storage component, is a critical step in the nation’s clean energy strategy. A consortium led by Abu Dhabi’s Masdar has been awarded the project, with financial close achieved and completion expected by the first quarter of 2027. The plant is projected to power approximately 33,000 homes.
Driving Oman’s Energy Future: 500 MW Solar Power Initiatives in Oman to Meet Growing Demand
The Ibri 3 project follows a pattern of successful solar deployments. It builds on the foundation of the 500 MW Ibri II solar plant, which was inaugurated in January 2022. Additionally, significant construction progress has been made on the Manah 1 and Manah 2 solar projects, each also boasting a 500 MW capacity. These developments underscore a consistent and ambitious national push towards renewable generation.
The tender process for Ibri 3 was managed by Nama Water and Energy Procurement and attracted a robust field of international developers, including Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power and Korea Midland Power, highlighting global confidence in Oman’s renewable energy sector.

Alignment with Oman’s Vision 2040
These large-scale solar initiatives are central to achieving Oman’s ambitious Vision 2040 objectives. The nation aims to have renewable sources constitute 30% of its electricity mix by 2030, with a long-term goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. Projects like Ibri 3 are essential for this transition, helping to substantially increase the country’s installed solar capacity from the 672 MW recorded at the end of 2024.
By leveraging its high solar irradiance and fostering international partnerships, Oman is solidifying its position as a key leader in the Middle East’s renewable energy landscape. This commitment not only attracts significant foreign investment but also aligns the country with the global shift towards a more sustainable energy future.
