Alba Hydro alumina supply: 2024 Impressive Partnership Deal

Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba) (https://www.albasmelter.com/) and Hydro (https://www.hydro.com/en-BH/) are expanding their partnership to supply Reduxa low-carbon alumina to Alba’s smelter in Bahrain. The agreement marks Hydro’s first delivery of Reduxa to the Middle East and underscores the growing focus on decarbonization in the region’s aluminum industry. This sustainable initiative finds a fitting backdrop in Bahrain, which is actively pursuing renewable energy goals as detailed in resources like Bahrain renewable energy: 5 Amazing Solar Projects by 2025.

Alba Hydro Alumina Supply Partnership for Decarbonization

This expanded partnership includes a long-term extension of the existing alumina supply agreement from 2014, as well as a new contract specifically for Hydro’s Reduxa low-carbon alumina. The deal solidifies their collaboration, building on nearly a decade of partnership.

Alba’s CEO, Rob van Gils, and Hydro’s Head of Aluminium Metal, Eivind Kallevik, formalized the agreement at the Future Investment Initiative (FII) conference in Riyadh. This significant deal underscores both companies’ commitment to decarbonizing the aluminum sector, aligning with broader global initiatives to reduce industrial carbon emissions.

Eivind Kallevik stated, “With this agreement, Hydro and Alba are taking the next step in our long cooperation as strategic partners. We are both committed to leadership in decarbonization and sustainability, and this agreement is an example of how we are putting that into practice. We are looking forward to providing Alba with Reduxa low-carbon alumina and to continuing to deliver on our long-term alumina supply agreement.”

Hydro Reduxa: Expanding Alba Hydro Alumina Supply

Produced at Hydro’s Alunorte refinery in Brazil, Hydro Reduxa has a carbon footprint approximately 30% lower than the global average for alumina production, according to the International Aluminium Institute (IAI). This reduction is the result of process optimizations and the use of renewable energy sources.

By incorporating Reduxa into its production, Alba can significantly decrease the embedded carbon in its aluminum products.

Rob van Gils commented, “Our ambition is to become a leader in decarbonization, and this agreement with Hydro is a strong step forward. We are proud to be the first smelter in the Middle East to receive Hydro Reduxa low-carbon alumina, and we look forward to delivering even more low-carbon aluminium to our global customers. We are also pleased to extend our long-term alumina supply agreement with Hydro, which is a testament to the strength and trust of our partnership. We are looking forward to continuing our cooperation as strategic partners.”
