In a significant move to advance Canada’s federal clean energy objectives, the Department of National Defence (DND) has awarded a contract to energy solutions provider Ameresco to construct a new solar facility. The project will be located at the Fifth Canadian Division Support Base (CDSB) in Oromocto, New Brunswick, and is a key component of the nation’s strategy to power all federal buildings with 100% clean electricity by 2025.
The CAD 26.7 million (USD 18.8 million) initiative involves the development of a 7.4 MWac (8.9 MWdc) ground-mounted solar park. Ameresco will oversee the entire project lifecycle, from design and engineering to procurement and construction. Following its commissioning, the company will also manage operations and maintenance for a 25-year term, ensuring the long-term reliability and performance of the asset.
Engineered to meet the specific needs of the military installation, the solar park will feature an array of nearly 14,500 photovoltaic modules. Once operational, the system is projected to generate approximately 8,900 MWh of electricity each year. This output will satisfy 20% of the base’s total energy requirements, with all generated power being consumed directly on-site to maximize efficiency and reduce grid dependency.
The project is expected to deliver substantial environmental and economic returns. Annually, it will offset an estimated 7,690 metric tons of carbon dioxide, contributing significantly to the DND’s decarbonization efforts. Financially, the base anticipates saving around CAD 1.3 million in utility costs per year. This investment in solar technology therefore enhances both ecological stewardship and fiscal responsibility.
For one of Canada’s largest military bases, energy security is paramount to operational readiness. By generating a substantial portion of its own electricity, the Oromocto base will improve its energy resilience. This initiative demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to modernizing defence infrastructure, proving that harnessing the power of solar is a strategic advantage that offers a clean, cost-effective, and secure energy future for critical national assets.
