Avantus has secured a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Arizona Public Service (APS) to develop the Kitt Solar Project. Located in the City of Eloy in Pinal County, Arizona, the facility is poised to significantly enhance the state’s renewable energy infrastructure with 100 MWac (130 MWdc) of solar photovoltaic capacity and a substantial 400 MWh energy storage system.
The project is strategically designed to address Arizona’s escalating energy demand and bolster grid resilience, particularly during periods of extreme weather. “The Kitt Solar Project will not only deliver clean solar energy and offset carbon emissions but will provide much-needed energy storage capacity to meet rising demand and create a more resilient grid in Arizona,” said Cliff Graham, CEO of Avantus. APS Director of Resource Acquisition Derek Seaman noted that with Arizona’s peak energy demand set to grow, the project will supply “cost-competitive and clean electricity” while its storage capacity enhances reliability during critical high-demand periods.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025, with the project expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026. Once online, Kitt Solar will generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 32,000 homes. The project’s environmental benefits are significant, with an estimated annual offset of 200,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide—equivalent to taking 45,000 gasoline-powered cars off the road each year.
Beyond its environmental contributions, the project is a major economic driver for the region, expected to create between 400 and 500 construction jobs and generate local tax revenue for public services like schools and infrastructure. This development is part of Avantus’s expansive U.S. portfolio, which includes 30 GW of solar and 94 GWh of energy storage projects. The agreement for Kitt Solar follows the company’s recent sale of the Catclaw Solar and Energy Storage Project, which also supplies clean power to APS, underscoring Avantus’s continued commitment to Arizona’s sustainable energy future.
