Ayg-1 Solar Project: 2 Incredible GW Initiative Launching in 2026

The Ayg-1 Solar Project: A Landmark in Renewable Energy Innovation

The Ayg-1 Solar Photovoltaic Project, a monumental 2 GW solar power initiative in Abu Dhabi, is poised to revolutionize the UAE’s energy landscape. Set to begin operations in 2026, this project boasts a 30-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with a bid tariff of just $1.6215 per kilowatt hour.

Ayg-1 Solar Project Becomes the Largest Solar Initiative in the UAE

Destined to become the largest solar venture in the UAE, the Ayg-1 Solar Photovoltaic Project will be nestled in Abu Dhabi and is slated for commercial operations by 2026. Developed under the independent power producer (IPP) model, the project represents a significant leap forward in the region’s renewable energy sector.

The Ayg-1 initiative is the seventh solar photovoltaic (PV) project launched by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) and the sixth under the management of the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). Awarded with a 30-year PPA at a record-breaking low bid tariff, this project underscores the UAE’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Once operational, the Ayg-1 project will generate enough electricity to power approximately 160,000 homes, drastically reducing carbon emissions by 1.6 million tonnes annually. This initiative aligns closely with the UAE’s Energy Strategy 2050, which envisions clean energy comprising 50% of the national energy mix.

Financial Close Achieved for Ayg-1 Solar Project

The Ayg-1 project reached financial closure in the third quarter of 2024, marking a significant milestone in its development. Key stakeholders include the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), Mubadala Investment Company, and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), collectively holding a 40% stake. The remaining 60% is owned by a Japanese consortium comprising Jinko Power and Marubeni Corporation, awarded the development contract in April 2024.

Occupying a 20 square kilometer expanse in the Ajban region of Abu Dhabi, this strategic location is set to be a cornerstone in bolstering the area’s energy infrastructure.

Ayg-1 Solar Project’s Role in Advancing the UAE’s Energy Strategy

The Ayg-1 project is integral to the UAE’s broader strategy to diversify its energy sources and diminish reliance on fossil fuels. By integrating more renewable energy solutions, the UAE is setting a benchmark with its 2050 goal: achieving a clean energy share of 50% in its total energy mix. This project is poised to be a critical player in fulfilling the increasing energy demands while upholding environmental sustainability.

As a pivotal milestone in the UAE’s journey toward a sustainable energy future, the Ayg-1 project is not only a testament to the nation’s energy security but also a model for other regional countries aiming to transition to renewables. With its 2026 launch on the horizon, this project represents a significant advancement in the UAE’s dedication to clean energy and environmental stewardship.
