Azerbaijan’s Solar Wind Plants Renewable Energy Initiative
Azerbaijan plans to commission 11 solar and wind power plants with a combined capacity of approximately 2 gigawatts by the end of 2027, according to Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov. These projects represent the first phase of Azerbaijan’s renewable energy expansion, aimed at diversifying electricity generation beyond fossil fuels.
The initiative is expected to attract around $2 billion from private investors and $600 million from state funding. Azerbaijan also aims to develop around 8 gigawatts of solar and wind energy capacity by 2032.
The Energy Minister indicated that competitive renewable energy auctions are anticipated to commence in 2028, signifying the next phase of the country’s renewable energy development.
Investment and Capacity Goals for Azerbaijan Solar Wind Plants
Shahbazov mentioned that the investment in these projects will significantly enhance the existing energy portfolio in Azerbaijan, which has a current renewable energy technical potential estimated at 135 gigawatts onshore and 157 gigawatts offshore.
According to Shahbazov, the projects align with the government’s longer-term goals to bolster the nation’s energy infrastructure and reduce its dependency on other forms of energy.
Energy Generation Statistics of Azerbaijan Solar Wind Plants
Recent data has shown that Azerbaijan’s renewable electricity generation exceeded 4 billion kilowatt-hours in nine months. This includes contributions from various sources, with significant advancements in solar and wind energy production.
The establishment of these solar and wind facilities aligns with Azerbaijan’s commitment to increasing the share of renewable energy in its total energy mix, while fostering investment in the country’s energy sector.
