Bahrain solar plant: Impressive 2.8GW Project Launched

In a landmark move for regional energy cooperation, Bahrain has partnered with Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power to develop a colossal 2.8GW solar project, which will be integrated with a 400MWh battery energy storage system. This ambitious cross-border initiative is set to fundamentally transform Bahrain’s energy landscape, providing a massive boost to its renewable capacity and propelling it toward its net-zero carbon ambitions.

Project Highlights: The Bahrain solar plant

Bahrain is taking a significant leap forward in its renewable energy strategy by formalizing a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) between ACWA Power, a leading Saudi utility developer, and Bapco Energies. The agreement paves the way for a monumental solar energy project that underscores growing cross-border collaboration within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Contrary to a conventional domestic project, this 2.8 GW solar plant will be developed in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, with all the electricity generated transmitted to Bahrain’s national grid. The project will be constructed in two phases, each adding 1.4 GW of capacity.

The first phase is scheduled to become operational by the fourth quarter of 2026, with the second phase slated for completion by the fourth quarter of 2028. A critical component of this initiative is the inclusion of a 400MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). This large-scale battery storage will be instrumental in maintaining grid stability, managing intermittency, and storing surplus energy generated during peak sunlight hours for use when needed.

Once fully operational, the project is projected to meet an astounding 62% of Bahrain’s total electricity demand. The landmark agreement was formalized at a signing ceremony attended by key figures including Bahrain’s Minister of Electricity and Water Affairs, Yasser Bin Ebrahim Humaidan, and ACWA Power Chairman, Mohammad Abunayyan.

Bahrain’s Renewable Energy Goals

This 2.8 GW solar project is a cornerstone of Bahrain’s National Energy Strategy, which aims to diversify its energy sources and reduce its carbon footprint. The nation has set an ambitious target of achieving 5GW of clean energy capacity by 2030 as part of its broader commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2060.

This initiative is the largest among a portfolio of clean energy efforts.
