Latvia’s Green Genius Launches 120.8 MW Solar Project
In a landmark moment for renewable energy in the Baltic region, a massive 120.8 MW solar project has officially been switched on in Latvia. The impressive facility, developed by the Lithuanian-based company Green Genius, is being celebrated as the largest single-site solar array in the Baltics to date, marking a significant step forward in the nation’s green energy transition.
The launch, which took place in early February 2026, is not just a standalone achievement but a powerful symbol of Latvia’s accelerating solar ambitions.
Powering Latvia’s Renewable Energy Surge with the Baltic solar project
The Green Genius project is the latest and largest addition to Latvia’s rapidly expanding solar portfolio. The country has demonstrated remarkable growth in recent years, adding an impressive 258 MW of new photovoltaic (PV) capacity in 2025 alone. This followed a record-breaking year in 2024, which saw 356 MW installed.
By the close of 2025, Latvia’s cumulative solar capacity had reached 920 MW. This total is composed of 710 MW from utility-scale power plants and 210 MW from smaller microgenerators, showcasing a healthy mix of large and small-scale adoption. The year 2025 also saw 484 solar power plants connected to the distribution system, including another significant 94 MW site developed by Ignitis Renewables.
An Even Brighter Solar Future on the Horizon for the Baltic solar project
Industry experts note that with several projects still in the commissioning phase at the start of the year, Latvia has likely already surpassed the significant milestone of 1 GW of total installed solar capacity in early 2026.
The momentum shows no signs of slowing down. The development pipeline is robust, featuring several new projects exceeding the 100 MW mark. Forecasts for 2026 predict that Latvia could add another 500 MW of solar capacity. This rapid pace of deployment puts the country on a trajectory to surpass its end-of-decade target of 1.3 GW years ahead of schedule, cementing its role as a key player in the region’s energy transition.
Government Incentives Fueling the Baltic solar project Transition
This remarkable growth is bolstered by strong government support. Reinforcing its commitment to clean energy, Latvia’s Ministry of Climate and Energy approved a €26.8 million grant program in February 2026. This initiative is designed to support the installation of solar panels, battery storage systems, and heat pumps for residents, local governments, and state agencies, further encouraging widespread adoption.
