GEN-I and Sunotec have forged a significant five-year strategic partnership to advance battery energy storage systems (BESS) management. This collaboration is set to enhance commercial and operational efficiency in the energy market, with a strong focus on Southeast Europe.
Partnership to Enhance Battery Energy Storage Systems
The companies will collaborate on pioneering projects to develop and deploy innovative solutions for integrating and managing battery energy storage systems. This partnership aims to fundamentally improve the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of energy storage, supporting the wider adoption of renewable energy sources across the continent. The collaboration is structured around a long-term revenue-sharing model, ensuring both parties’ interests are fully aligned in maximizing asset value and performance.
Sunotec, a leading European solar EPC company, brings its extensive expertise in large-scale solar projects and renewable energy integration. With a robust track record of delivering sustainable energy solutions, the company has completed over 1,000 solar projects worldwide, amounting to more than 10 GWp of installed capacity.
GEN-I, a global energy supply and trading company, will contribute its deep experience as an exclusive asset optimizer and trading partner. GEN-I’s role will involve sophisticated, algorithm-supported management of the battery assets 24/7. The company has a broad portfolio and a strong presence in over 18 countries, serving more than 500,000 customers and supplying 20 TWh of electricity annually.
Benefits of Battery Energy Storage Systems
Battery energy storage systems are the critical link in the transition to a renewable-powered future. As the energy industry pivots towards intermittent renewables like solar and wind, BESS provide a reliable and efficient method to store and release energy on demand. These systems are essential for integrating renewables, stabilizing the grid, and enhancing overall energy resilience. For consumers in Germany and across Europe, a more stable grid means a more reliable power supply, even as the share of green energy increases.
This collaboration leverages GEN-I’s advanced energy trading and BESS management capabilities alongside Sunotec’s engineering and construction prowess. GEN-I will manage charging, discharging, real-time dispatching, and market optimization. This includes participation in wholesale intraday, day-ahead, and ancillary services markets, which are crucial for grid stability. As seen in other markets, these systems are not just passive storage units; they provide critical, fast-response grid services like frequency regulation and load balancing.
Projects and Innovation in Battery Energy Storage Systems
The collaboration between GEN-I and Sunotec is set to drive significant advancements in the BESS sector. Their primary focus will be on two large-scale battery storage facilities currently under construction by Sunotec in Bulgaria. These projects represent a combined capacity of approximately 200 MW and a storage capacity of about 505 MWh.
The two facilities, one with 150 MW capacity (379 MWh storage) and another with 50 MW capacity (126 MWh storage), are expected to be fully operational by the end of March 2026. This initiative builds on the partners’ previous work, such as a 10 MW/20 MWh BESS project in Slovenia, which underscores the impressive 2024 expansion planned for Slovenia’s solar and battery sector.
Furthermore, the partnership will continue to explore opportunities to integrate BESS with solar PV systems. Battery storage allows for better management of the intermittent nature of solar energy, storing surplus generation during peak sunlight and releasing it when demand is high or the sun isn’t shining. This integration not only boosts the economic viability of solar projects through energy trading but also provides vital support for grid stability.
Contribution to a Greener Future with Battery Energy Storage
The partnership between GEN-I and Sunotec represents a major step forward in developing a resilient energy system in the Southeast European region. By combining their distinct expertise, the two companies are creating end-to-end solutions—from development and construction to market optimization and operation—that will benefit the entire energy industry and contribute to a more sustainable, reliable power grid.
This collaboration is a testament to the growing importance of battery energy storage in the modern energy market. As the demand for clean, renewable energy continues to rise, strategic partnerships like this will be crucial in building an energy infrastructure capable of meeting the needs of the future.
