FRV, the renewable energy subsidiary of Abdul Latif Jameel, plans to develop over 2.9 GW/11 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Italy. The portfolio is focused on standalone storage projects, aimed at providing essential grid services and supporting the national electricity system.
The planned capacity will be distributed across various regions of Italy. The largest shares are allocated to Sicily (745 MW), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (663 MW), and Puglia (445 MW). Additional projects will be located in Molise, Lombardy, Marche, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Campania, and Sardinia.
According to reports, these projects are already in an advanced stage of development. They are expected to reach a ready-to-build status between 2026 and 2029. This deployment is anticipated to strengthen Italy’s grid infrastructure prior to the full implementation of MACSE, Terna’s storage procurement mechanism.
