Bhutan solar project: 100 MW Solar Initiative Marks Incredible Milestone

Juniper Green Energy has announced the successful commissioning of a 100 MW solar power plant at the Indore Solar Park in Madhya Pradesh, a landmark cross-border project designed to supply clean energy directly to Bhutan. This initiative marks a monumental achievement in the nation’s pursuit of renewable energy diversification and a significant step toward achieving its ambitious solar capacity targets.

The Bhutan solar project: 100 MW Solar Initiative Marks Incredible Milestone

Secured through a competitive bidding process, the project will deliver electricity to Bhutan via the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) at a tariff of Rs 2.60 per unit. The 100 MW plant is a cornerstone of Bhutan’s strategy to reduce its heavy dependence on hydropower, thereby enhancing its energy security, particularly during the dry seasons when hydropower generation is limited. According to Lyonpo Loknath Sharma, Minister of Economic Affairs, this initiative is a crucial step towards fulfilling the nation’s renewable energy goals.

This project is a key component of Bhutan’s goal to generate 200 MW of solar power by 2025. It complements other national efforts, such as the domestic Sephu Solar Project, and aligns with the strategic financial planning outlined in reports on Bhutan’s growing renewable energy investments.

Economic and Environmental Dividends

Constructed on a 400-acre site, the solar park is projected to have a profound impact. It is expected to generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 200,000 households and create over 500 jobs, providing a significant boost to sustainable development. Environmentally, the plant is set to offset an estimated 100,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, contributing substantially to Bhutan’s climate commitments.

A Testament to Innovation and Collaboration

Juniper Green Energy, which has a portfolio of over 1.2 GW in renewable energy projects, completed the plant in a record 10-month timeframe. Jitendra Agrawal, CEO of the company, expressed immense pride in the achievement. ‘This milestone reflects our commitment to sustainability and innovation,’ he remarked, emphasizing the dedication to delivering high-quality renewable solutions.

As a nation renowned for its dedication to environmental preservation, Bhutan’s strategic pivot to solar power paves the way for a more resilient energy grid. This successful international collaboration sets a powerful precedent for future renewable energy partnerships in South Asia and solidifies Bhutan’s ambition to become a regional leader in sustainability.
