Renewable energy firm Blupine Energy has entered into a significant Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with APL Apollo Building Products for a 61.65 MW solar power plant located in Chhattisgarh, India. The deal, finalized around June 10, 2024, reinforces the nation’s push towards industrial decarbonization through clean energy adoption.
The project is structured under a group captive model, which involves APL Apollo and other consumers holding a 26% stake in the plant’s special purpose vehicle (SPV). This framework provides a stable, long-term supply of clean energy, directly supporting APL Apollo’s operational needs while advancing its sustainability objectives.
Blupine Energy Signs 61.65 MW Solar Plant Deal with APL Apollo: Project Impact and Environmental Benefits
Once operational, the Chhattisgarh solar facility is projected to generate approximately 94.5 million units (MUs) of electricity annually. This clean power generation will have a substantial environmental impact, offsetting more than 87,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. For APL Apollo, India’s largest manufacturer of structural steel tubes and pipes, this translates into reduced operating costs, greater energy efficiency, and a significantly smaller carbon footprint.
Strategic Growth for Blupine Energy After Solar Plant Deal
This agreement marks a key milestone for Blupine Energy, a platform established by global investor Actis. The PPA boosts the company’s commercial and industrial (C&I) portfolio to approximately 400 MW, which is currently in various stages of development. It moves the company closer to its ambitious target of reaching a 1,000 MW C&I capacity. Demonstrating strong project momentum, Blupine also successfully achieved financial closure and secured $28.6 million in financing for a related 75 MWp solar project in Chhattisgarh by July 2024.
A Model for Sustainable Industry: Blupine Energy and APL Apollo
The collaboration between Blupine Energy and APL Apollo serves as a powerful example of how major industrial players can proactively transition to renewable energy sources. By securing a reliable supply of solar power, APL Apollo not only lowers its energy costs and reliance on fossil fuels but also strengthens its commitment to corporate social responsibility and a greener value chain. This partnership highlights the growing trend of C&I consumers driving the expansion of renewable energy capacity across India.
