Bosnia energy efficiency: Impressive EUR 15.9M Investment

Central Bosnia Canton Allocates EUR 15.9 Million for Energy Efficiency

In a significant move towards sustainability, the Central Bosnia Canton is set to channel EUR 15.9 million into a large-scale energy efficiency initiative aimed at renovating its public infrastructure. According to a report from regional energy news outlets, this investment will primarily focus on upgrading educational and health facilities, promising to lower energy consumption and enhance public service environments.

Strategic Financing for Bosnia energy efficiency: Impressive EUR 15.9M Investment

The project’s funding is a collaborative effort involving major international financial institutions. A proposed sovereign loan of up to EUR 12 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to Bosnia and Herzegovina forms the core of the financing package, which will then be on-lent to the canton. The EBRD is expected to make its final decision on the loan by June 17, 2026.

Further bolstering the initiative is a co-financing grant of up to EUR 3 million, provided by the European Union through its Renewable Energy Efficiency Programme for the Western Balkans (REEP). This blend of loan and grant funding highlights a unified push to advance the region’s climate and energy objectives.

Comprehensive Upgrades for Public Buildings

The initiative will target as many as 55 public buildings for comprehensive retrofits. The scope of work is designed for maximum impact and includes insulating external walls and roofs, replacing outdated windows with high-performance units, installing modern, energy-efficient lighting systems, and transitioning heating systems to cleaner fuel sources. These measures will not only generate significant energy savings but also improve comfort and safety for the buildings’ occupants.

Targeting Tangible Environmental and Economic Benefits

The project has a clear and ambitious target: to achieve a minimum 30% reduction in primary energy demand across all renovated buildings. This substantial decrease is expected to yield considerable operational cost savings for the canton, reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions, and support Bosnia and Herzegovina’s national commitments to sustainability. The Ministry of Spatial Planning of the Central Bosnia Canton will oversee the implementation, ensuring the project delivers on its economic, social, and environmental goals.
