Bosnia renewable energy: Stunning 75% Production Rise in May

Bosnia Renewable Energy Surge: A 75% Increase in May

Bosnia and Herzegovina generated 1,064 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity from renewable sources in May 2025, a remarkable 75% increase compared to the same month in 2024. This surge highlights the country’s ongoing transition towards a more sustainable energy future.

Hydropower Dominates Bosnia’s Renewable Energy Growth

According to the Bosnian Agency for Statistics, hydropower remained the dominant source of renewable electricity, accounting for 89.5% (952 GWh) of the total renewable generation in May. While hydropower plays a crucial role, both wind and solar also showed substantial growth, contributing 9.3% (99 GWh) and 1.2% (13 GWh) respectively.

The year-on-year growth across these sectors was particularly noteworthy. Hydropower generation increased by 78.1%, wind energy production rose by 43.5%, and solar energy output surged by an impressive 85.7% compared to May 2024. For a deeper understanding of the solar sector’s development, refer to the Bosnia and Herzegovina Solar Panel Manufacturing Report.

Overall Production Rises as Thermal Power Declines

Bosnia and Herzegovinaโ€™s total electricity production in May reached 1,391 GWh, a 27.2% increase compared to the same month last year. While renewable sources drove this growth, thermal power generation saw a significant decline.

Thermal power plants contributed 327 GWh (23.5% of the total output), marking a 23.5% decrease from the 428 GWh produced in May 2024. This shift away from thermal power underscores the countryโ€™s commitment to decarbonizing its energy sector.

Electricity Exports and Imports in May 2025

In May 2025, Bosnia and Herzegovina exported 310 GWh of electricity, a slight decrease of 3.7% from May 2024. Conversely, electricity imports saw a substantial drop of 48.2%, totaling 207 GWh. These figures point to a growing capacity to meet domestic electricity demand.

A Breakdown of Bosnia’s Installed Power Capacity

Bosnia and Herzegovina has a total installed capacity of 4,500 MW in its power system. According to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, renewable sources like wind, small hydro, and solar make up 13% of this capacity (596 MW).

This includes 131 MW from wind farms, 109 MW from small hydropower plants, and 356 MW from solar power plants. In addition, major hydropower plants operated by Elektroprivreda BiH, Elektroprivreda HZHB, and Elektroprivreda RS provide a significant 2,042 MW, making up 45% of the total installed capacity.

Renewables Surge Signals Greater Energy Independence

The substantial increase in renewable energy generationโ€”particularly from hydropower, wind, and solarโ€”demonstrates Bosnia and Herzegovina’s dedication to a cleaner energy future. This 75% rise in renewable electricity production in May 2025 marks a major step towards greater energy independence and reduced reliance on fossil fuels, boosting both environmental sustainability and energy security.
