Bosnia Renewable Energy Surge: A 75% Increase in May
In May 2025, Bosnia and Herzegovina generated 1,064 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity from renewable sources, a remarkable 75% increase compared to May 2024. This surge underscores the country’s ongoing transition toward a more sustainable energy future.
Hydropower Dominates Bosnia Renewable Energy Growth
Hydropower remained the dominant source of renewable electricity, accounting for 89.5% of the total renewable generation in May at 952 GWh, according to the Bosnian Agency for Statistics. While hydropower played a major role, wind and solar power also showed substantial growth. Wind power contributed 9.3% (99 GWh) and solar 1.2% (13 GWh) to the renewable mix. The year-on-year growth in these sectors was significant: hydropower generation increased by 78.1%, wind energy production rose by 43.5%, and solar output surged by an impressive 85.7% over May 2024. For a deeper understanding of the solar sector’s development, refer to the Bosnia and Herzegovina Solar Panel Manufacturing Report.
Overall Electricity Production in Bosnia: Renewable Energy’s Impact
Overall electricity production in Bosnia and Herzegovina reached 1,391 GWh in May, a significant 27.2% increase compared to the same month last year. While renewable sources drove this growth, thermal power generation declined. Thermal power plants contributed 23.5% to the total output, generating 327 GWh in May—a 23.5% decrease from the 428 GWh produced in May 2024. This shift away from thermal power highlights Bosnia’s commitment to decarbonizing its energy sector.
Bosnia Renewable Energy and Electricity Trade in May 2025
In May 2025, Bosnia and Herzegovina exported 310 GWh of electricity, a slight 3.7% decrease compared to May 2024. Conversely, electricity imports dropped substantially by 48.2% year-on-year to total 207 GWh. These figures suggest a growing domestic capacity to meet electricity demand.
Installed Capacity and the Future of Bosnia Renewable Energy
Bosnia and Herzegovina has a total installed capacity of 4,500 MW. According to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, renewable energy sources currently account for 13% of this capacity, with 596 MW supplied by wind farms (131 MW), small hydropower plants (109 MW), and solar power plants (356 MW). The country’s major hydropower plants, operated by Elektroprivreda BiH, Elektroprivreda HZHB, and Elektroprivreda RS, contribute a significant 2,042 MW, representing 45% of the total installed capacity.
Bosnia Renewable Energy: A Path Towards a Sustainable Mix
The substantial increase in renewable energy generation, particularly from hydropower, wind, and solar, demonstrates Bosnia and Herzegovina’s dedication to a cleaner energy future. The 75% rise in renewable electricity production in May 2025 marks a major step toward greater energy independence and reduced reliance on fossil fuels, bolstering both environmental sustainability and energy security.
