Cambodia’s Clean Energy Transition Goals
Cambodia is accelerating its clean energy transition as a strategy to enhance energy security, affordability, and resilience against global fuel price volatility. The government has set a target for at least 70% of its electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030. Currently, more than 63% of Cambodia’s domestic installed power capacity is derived from renewables, primarily hydropower and solar energy.
Key Projects Supporting Cambodia’s Clean Energy Transition
Significant initiatives include over 1,100 MW of solar power installations and 500 MW of battery storage capacity. A notable project is the 250 MW/500 MWh battery system in Kampong Chhnang and the 1,000 MW Upper Tatay pumped storage project, aimed at bolstering the country’s renewable energy infrastructure. These advancements are part of a broader plan to reduce the country’s vulnerability to fluctuating fuel prices.
International Collaboration for Cambodia’s Clean Energy Transition and Green Financing
Cambodia is collaborating with international partners, including Australia, to bolster energy planning and expand access to green finance. These efforts are designed to create new clean-energy jobs and enhance the country’s competitiveness in the global market, particularly in exports. The implementation of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) is also in progress, allowing businesses in Cambodia to accurately track their renewable electricity usage and align with international standards.
Growth in Electric Vehicles and the Cambodia Clean Energy Transition
The transition to clean energy is evident in Cambodia’s rising electric mobility. From 2021 to August 2026, the country registered 16,926 electric vehicles (EVs), with a pronounced increase in 2026. This surge is reportedly linked to rising global fuel prices, making electric options more attractive to motorists.
