Cambodia solar power plant Launches 60-Megawatt Amazing Project

Cambodia has marked a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey with the commissioning of a 60-megawatt solar facility in Kampong Chhnang province. This project, representing the first phase of a larger 100 MW National Solar Park, is a cornerstone of the nation’s strategy to enhance energy security and embrace sustainable power generation.

A New Benchmark for Solar Energy in Southeast Asia

The 60 MW plant stands out not just for its contribution to the national grid, but for its groundbreaking economic achievement. The project secured a power purchase agreement at a tariff of just $0.039 per kilowatt-hour, which at the time was the lowest price for solar energy in Southeast Asia. This record-low bid underscores the increasing cost-competitiveness of solar power and sets an impressive precedent for future renewable projects in the region.

Strategic Partnership and Future Growth

Developed as a public-private partnership with backing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the National Solar Park exemplifies a successful model for attracting investment into Cambodia’s clean energy sector. The plant, which was connected to the grid in late 2022, is a critical component of Cambodia’s plan to diversify its energy mix away from a heavy reliance on fossil fuels and hydropower, thereby reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainable economic growth.

With this initial 60 MW phase now operational, Cambodia is well-positioned to continue its expansion of solar capacity. The project not only provides a clean, reliable source of electricity to meet rising demand but also serves as a powerful symbol of the country’s commitment to a greener future and its leadership in the regional transition to renewable energy.
