Chattogram solar plant: Impressive 45MW deal signed

BPDB Signs PPA for 45MW Solar Plant in Chattogram

In a significant move to bolster Bangladesh’s renewable energy capacity, the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has officially signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a 45-megawatt (MW) grid-connected solar power plant to be established in Fatikchhari, Chattogram. This project marks another key step in the nation’s journey towards a sustainable and secure energy future.

The agreement was formalized on January 25 at Power Bhaban in a ceremony attended by key officials. The PPA was signed with Karnaphuli Power Limited, a joint venture between the Baraka Group and InfraCo Asia, solidifying a long-term partnership to generate clean energy.

The Agreement in Detail: Chattogram solar plant

Under the terms of the 20-year agreement, the solar plant will supply 45 MW of alternating current (AC) electricity directly to the national grid. This infusion of solar power will play a crucial role in diversifying the country’s energy mix and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.

The signing ceremony highlighted the collaborative effort behind this initiative. The agreement was signed by BPDB Secretary Rashedul Haque Pradhan and Fahim Ahmed Chowdhury, representing the Karnaphuli InfraCo joint venture. The event was graced by the presence of BPDB Chairman Engineer Md Rezaul Karim, Baraka Group Director Naim Ahmed Chowdhury, and other high-ranking officials from both organizations.

Part of a Nationwide Renewable Energy Push: Chattogram solar plant

This 45MW project in Chattogram is not an isolated effort. It is a vital component of a larger, strategic push by the BPDB to expand solar power generation across Bangladesh. This initiative is in line with the government’s goals to increase the share of renewables in the country’s total energy output.

Recently, the BPDB has greenlit several other solar projects, demonstrating a clear and sustained commitment to clean energy. These include:

  • A 200MW plant also in Fatikchhari
  • A 100MW project in Mongla
  • A 100MW facility in Cox’s Bazar
  • A 50MW plant in Nilphamari
  • An 18MW project in Hathazari
  • A 10MW plant in Noakhali

Together, these projects represent a substantial increase in Bangladesh’s capacity to harness solar power, contributing to both environmental sustainability and national energy security. The development in Fatikchhari is a testament to the ongoing efforts to transform Bangladesh’s energy landscape one solar panel at a time.
