Chile renewable energy target: Unique boost to 80% by 2030

Chile is cementing its reputation as a global leader in the energy transition, driven by a national strategy to achieve an 80% renewable electricity matrix by 2030. This ambitious goal is part of a broader vision for the country to reach 100% zero-emissions power by 2050, a target that is increasingly within reach thanks to remarkable progress and significant private sector action.

Record-Breaking Progress and the Chile renewable energy target: Unique boost to 80% by 2030

The nation’s push towards decarbonization is already yielding impressive results. In 2024, renewable sources supplied an estimated 70% of Chile’s electricity. The country celebrated a major milestone in December when wind and solar power alone accounted for a record 42% of monthly electricity generation, demonstrating the rapidly growing capacity of its clean energy infrastructure.

Fueling this momentum are strategic corporate partnerships. AES Andes, a subsidiary of the AES Corporation, has announced a significant agreement with a leading Chilean renewable energy company, REN. The partnership involves the acquisition of a 1,200 MW portfolio of projects currently under development, comprising 800 MW of wind and 400 MW of solar capacity located in Chile’s central-southern region.

Bernardo Vargas Gibsone, CEO of AES Andes, emphasized the deal’s role in the company’s own green transition. “This strategic alliance with REN represents a major step forward in our decarbonization plan, which will accelerate the transformation of our energy matrix towards 80% renewable energy by 2028,” he stated. This corporate timeline notably aims to meet the national target two years ahead of schedule.

Chile’s commitment extends beyond its power grid. The country has also launched a National Green Hydrogen Strategy, positioning itself to become a key global producer. With plans to develop 25 GW of electrolysis capacity, Chile aims to supply up to 13% of the world’s green hydrogen by 2030, leveraging its abundant solar and wind resources to create a new clean energy export industry.

The collaboration between AES Andes and REN underscores the critical role of private investment in realizing these national objectives. Felipe Díaz, CEO of REN, highlighted this synergy, saying, “We are convinced that collaboration is essential to achieve the country’s renewable energy goals. This agreement with AES Andes reinforces our commitment to contribute to the energy transition and the sustainable development of Chile.”

Impact on Chile’s Sustainable Future and Chile renewable energy target: Unique boost to 80% by 2030

By adding 1,200 MW of new clean capacity, this single partnership will make a substantial contribution to Chile’s 2030 goal. Such initiatives are crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and decreasing reliance on imported fossil fuels. The alignment between government policy and corporate action continues to accelerate Chile’s journey toward a sustainable and prosperous energy future, setting a powerful example for the Latin American region and beyond.
