China solar industry: Stunning 2024 Export Growth Fuels Solar Hegemony
China’s solar industry shattered previous records in 2024, exporting a staggering 235.93 gigawatts (GW) of photovoltaic (PV) modules. This figure represents a remarkable 13% year-over-year increase from the 207.99 GW shipped in 2023, firmly cementing the nation’s unparalleled dominance in the global renewable energy supply chain.
The surge in solar exports is a cornerstone of China’s broader clean-energy economic strategy. In 2024, clean-energy products, including solar panels, constituted $177 billion in exports, accounting for approximately 5% of the country’s total export value. The environmental impact of this trade is profound, with these exports estimated to enable an annual reduction of 220 million tonnes of CO2 emissions overseas. Domestically, the clean energy sector contributed a record 10% to China’s GDP in 2024, with solar power alone accounting for 21% of that share, or about $390 billion.
This export growth was fueled by robust demand across multiple continents. The Americas saw a 10% increase in imports, reaching 33.28 GW, with Brazil remaining a key market. Even more impressive was the 26% growth in the Asia-Pacific region, highlighted by Pakistan’s extraordinary 127% year-over-year surge to 16.91 GW. While facing complex market dynamics, Europe also continued to be a major destination for Chinese solar products.
The foundation of this export powerhouse is China’s overwhelming control of the manufacturing pipeline. The country produces an astounding 93.2% of the world’s polysilicon, 96.6% of wafers, 92.3% of cells, and 86.4% of finished modules. This near-total command of the supply chain allows it to scale production and meet global demand with unmatched efficiency and volume.
Looking ahead to 2025, industry analysts forecast continued, albeit more moderate, global demand growth of 4-9%. However, the landscape is subject to evolving factors, including Europe’s economic performance, India’s push for domestic production, potential tariffs in Brazil, and the development of emerging markets across the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Regardless of these variables, China’s position as the indispensable engine of the global solar transition appears secure.
