Infineum & RheinEnergie Partner on 18 MW Cologne Solar Project
In a significant move toward advancing Germany’s energy transition, Deutsche Infineum and regional energy provider RheinEnergie have announced a major collaboration. The two companies have signed a contract to construct an 18-megawatt (MW) ground-mounted photovoltaic (PV) installation at Infineum’s industrial site in Cologne. This ambitious project is set to become one of the largest inner-city solar power facilities in the country.
A Landmark Cologne solar project for Urban Solar Power
The new solar park will be developed on Infineum’s property on Neusser Landstraße, transforming approximately 12 hectares of industrial land into a source of clean energy. The installation will feature around 25,300 high-capacity solar modules, each with an output of 710 watts.
Once operational, the facility is projected to generate approximately 18 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually. This substantial output will not only support Infineum’s production needs but will also produce enough surplus energy to meet the annual requirements of roughly 6,500 local households. This dual-purpose approach highlights the project’s significant contribution to both industrial decarbonization and the regional power grid.
Driving Corporate Sustainability and Climate Goals with the Cologne solar project
This partnership marks a strategic milestone for both companies. For Infineum, a global leader in the formulation, manufacture, and marketing of petroleum additives, the project is a crucial step towards its ambitious sustainability targets. The company aims to slash its scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030. The Cologne solar installation is expected to reduce COâ‚‚ emissions at the production site by up to 6,500 tonnes each year.
For RheinEnergie, the collaboration reinforces its position as a leading energy services provider committed to Cologne’s climate protection objectives. By developing large-scale renewable energy projects within the city, RheinEnergie is actively contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future for the region.
With commissioning scheduled for 2027, this collaboration between Infineum and RheinEnergie serves as a powerful example of how industrial players and energy providers can work together to achieve meaningful environmental progress and support the broader energy transition.
