Colombia added 698.2 MW of new generation capacity in Q3 2026, distributed across 42 projects. Solar energy projects accounted for nearly all of these additions, comprising 39 solar projects, alongside two thermal plants and one small hydroelectric facility.
By the end of September 2026, solar energy represented 11.7% of Colombia’s net effective generation capacity. The national grid operator XM reported that the country had approximately 2,720 MW of installed solar capacity, which equates to about 12% of total effective generation capacity.
The recent expansion, however, fell short of initial expectations. XM had projected 4,475 MW of new capacity for 2026, but as of October, only 1,169.5 MW had come online.
