Cyprus solar power issues spark Green Party criticism of renewable energy policies
The Cyprus government faces scrutiny from the Green Party, which accuses it of obstructing solar power development despite claims to prioritize renewable energy. The criticism comes amid soaring electricity costs and an urgent need for sustainable energy solutions—a need the government’s current policies seem unable to address effectively.
Despite these challenges, Cyprus is still working to boost its solar energy capacity. According to PVKnowhow, the country plans to install solar panels at National Guard camps between September 2024 and 2027. The initiative, supported by a 19 million euro investment from European grants, is meant to align with the government’s clean energy policies.
Cyprus also aims to significantly increase its renewable energy capacity to meet EU Green Deal goals, which require enhancing its solar power infrastructure. As of 2022, the country had an installed solar capacity of approximately 420 MW, with several notable solar farms contributing (source).
This push for renewables is matched by strong public interest. The Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) receives roughly 1,500 new applications each month from residents looking to install solar panels, signaling a clear demand for solar solutions.
The situation in Cyprus reflects broader industry trends, as solar power initiatives gain momentum worldwide. In the U.S., for example, companies like SolarBank Corporation are developing projects such as the Silver Springs development in New York. Expected to power up to 340 homes, the project is part of a community solar initiative that aligns with incentives from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) NY-Sun Program (source).
These global advancements underscore the potential for Cyprus to enhance its solar infrastructure and address its energy cost concerns. However, overcoming the current criticism and achieving the country’s renewable energy objectives will depend on the government’s commitment to implementing effective policies.
