In a pioneering move for the renewable energy sector, d.light, a global provider of household products and financing for low-income families, has unveiled the “d.light Points Programme” in Kenya. This initiative, launched on August 7, 2024, represents the first-ever customer loyalty program within the off-grid solar industry. The program is projected to reach and benefit more than 500,000 customers by the end of the year.
Rewarding Consistency and Easing Financial Strain
At its core, the new program is designed to reward customers for making regular, on-time payments for their Pay-As-You-Go (PayGo) solar products. For every consistent payment, customers accumulate points that can be redeemed for valuable rewards. These benefits include discounts on future product purchases and tokens for free days of electricity, providing tangible financial relief.
To ensure ease of use, d.light has integrated multiple platforms for customers to track and redeem their points. Users can check their balance and claim rewards in real-time via SMS, USSD messaging, or through the dedicated d.light mobile application. This multi-channel approach guarantees accessibility for all customers, regardless of their technological comfort level.
A Response to Customer Needs and Economic Pressures
The development of the d.light Points Programme was a meticulous, year-long process involving extensive customer research through focus groups, surveys, and in-depth interviews. This customer-centric approach was crucial for creating a program that offers meaningful and practical rewards.
Donal Connolly, Director of Credit at d.light, highlighted the challenging economic environment many customers face. “Our customers have had a tough time lately,” Connolly explained, referencing the high inflation and income instability that have put pressure on households, particularly in rural areas affected by climate change. He noted that these pressures directly impact a family’s ability to access and pay for reliable home energy.
“Our customers come first here at d.light, and we want to help them deal with these pressures and acknowledge their loyalty and support as well,” Connolly added. The loyalty program is a direct response, designed to save customers money and ensure uninterrupted access to power.
Following its successful launch in Kenya, d.light plans to expand the program to other key African markets, including Uganda, Tanzania, and Nigeria, before the end of 2024. This expansion signals a new standard for customer engagement in the off-grid solar energy sector, reinforcing the link between customer loyalty and sustainable energy access.
