Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is advancing its sustainability goals through a new partnership with EDP, a global leader in renewable energy. The collaboration will result in a 7 MWp distributed solar generation project at Goodyear’s facilities in Luxembourg, which will be installed by Enerdeal, a company that became part of the EDP group in 2023.
Powering Operations: EDP to Install 7 MWp Solar Project in Luxembourg
The comprehensive project is strategically divided into two main components: a large-scale 5 MWp rooftop solar array and a 2 MWp solar carport system. These installations will be spread across Goodyear’s research, development, and industrial complex in Colmar-Berg, while also supporting operations at its sites in Bissen and Dudelange. Once operational in early 2025, the system is projected to generate approximately 6,500 MWh of clean electricity each year. This entire output will be consumed on-site, directly powering Goodyear’s operations and displacing an estimated 3,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
An Innovative Financial Model for Solar Deployment
The 20-year agreement leverages an “As-a-Service” financing model, a key element of the partnership. Under this structure, EDP assumes 100% of the investment costs, removing the capital expenditure barrier for Goodyear and enabling the rapid deployment of a significant renewable energy solution. The financial benefits generated by the project will then be shared between the two companies.
Francois Neu, Enerdeal’s Country Manager, highlighted the model’s effectiveness, stating, “The solar as-a-service financing model allows our clients to rapidly and effortlessly deploy a massive renewable energy solution, fully in line with climate urgency… We are proud of this project with Goodyear, paving the way to a more sustainable future.” This approach demonstrates how strategic partnerships can accelerate the adoption of large-scale solar projects.
A Milestone in Goodyear’s Sustainability Journey with Solar
This project is a crucial step towards Goodyear’s ambitious environmental targets, which include achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2030 and transitioning its global manufacturing operations to 100% renewable energy by 2040. The Luxembourg installation will be the company’s eleventh on-site solar facility globally and its fifth in the EMEA region, expanding its total solar capacity to nearly 30 MW.
“These new projects mark an additional step forward in Goodyear’s transition to renewable energy in our facilities, and I’m proud to see the expansion of solar panel installations among our facilities in Luxembourg,” commented Romain Hansen, Vice President EMEA Product Development at Goodyear.
Meticulous Planning and Integration for Solar Efficiency
The successful implementation of the project hinges on careful planning to maximize efficiency and safety. Johann Saxenhammer, Energies and Facilities Manager at Tire Plant Luxembourg, noted the detailed preparation involved. “Energy optimisation was at the heart of discussions throughout the preparation of this project,” he said. “That’s why the integration into our existing electrical system was carefully planned to ensure a safe and efficient connection, as well as the specific location of the panels on the roof to optimise energy efficiency and maintenance.”
