EDP Demonstrates Impressive EDP renewable capacity hits 21.2 GW by 2026

Energias de Portugal (EDP) has marked a powerful start to the year, expanding its installed wind and solar capacity to 21.2 gigawatts (GW) by the close of the first quarter of 2026. This achievement signifies a 6% year-on-year growth, representing a net increase of 1.3 GW. The expansion was driven by the addition of 2.1 GW of new projects over the preceding 12 months, with the company’s EDP Renováveis (EDPR) division accounting for 2.0 GW of that new capacity.

Clean Energy Generation Surges

The growth in assets translated directly into higher green energy output. Total electricity generation for the quarter reached 19 terawatt-hours (TWh), a 4% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Remarkably, renewable sources accounted for 91% of this total production, underscoring the company’s successful decarbonization strategy. The primary contributors to this green mix were wind power at 47%, hydropower at 31%, and solar power at 13%. Combined, wind and solar generation produced 11.5 TWh, also reflecting a 4% year-on-year increase, bolstered by strong solar yields in North America and favorable conditions across Europe.

Strategic Growth and Future Pipeline

EDP’s 21.2 GW portfolio is strategically balanced between 12.5 GW of onshore wind and 4.8 GW of utility-scale solar, enabling it to harness diverse climate conditions. The company demonstrated dynamic portfolio management in the first quarter by securing 400 MW of new solar projects in the United States while divesting a 150 MW wind portfolio in Greece. Looking ahead, EDP maintains a robust development pipeline with an additional 1.9 GW of renewable capacity currently under construction. This continued investment and strategic asset rotation, as reported by industry publications like Windtech International, reinforces EDP’s position as a formidable force in the global energy transition.
