EEW Develops a 200 Mwdc Solar PV Plant in Partnership With COBRA Australia

Queensland’s renewable energy landscape is set for a significant boost with a new partnership between Eco Energy World (EEW), a multinational renewable project developer, and COBRA Australia, part of Vinci’s COBRA group. The two companies have joined forces on a major project valued at approximately A$250 million (€151 million) to construct a solar PV plant with a 200 MWdc capacity, coupled with a 50 MW battery energy storage system (BESS). The project is on track to achieve ready-to-build status by 2024.

EEW will spearhead the development of the combined solar plant and battery facility. In an official announcement on March 21, 2024, EEW CEO Svante Kumlin expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. “We are pleased to announce the collaboration on this solar PV project with Grupo COBRA; we have a long, successful presence in Australia, and this is one of the projects from our multi-GW pipeline in the country that is currently maturing,” he stated. Kumlin emphasized the project’s role in the region’s energy transition, adding, “We take great pride in our involvement in the energy transition in Queensland since 2015.”

Once operational, the facility is projected to generate over 400 GWh of clean energy annually, sufficient to power around 72,500 homes. This substantial output will have a significant environmental impact, displacing an estimated 260,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions each year—an effect comparable to permanently taking 93,000 cars off the road. Underscoring this impact, José Antonio Fernández García, COBRA’s Managing Director for Energy and Industrial Plants, noted, “This partnership is a clear indication of our commitment to accelerating the transition to a low-carbon future.”

This A$250 million development exemplifies the growing momentum in Australia’s renewable energy sector. The nation’s abundant natural resources, coupled with supportive government policies and technological progress, are creating a fertile environment for large-scale projects. As innovations continue to improve the efficiency and reliability of clean energy solutions, Australia is solidifying its position as a key destination for local and international investors committed to a sustainable energy future.
