Energy access Mozambique: 3.1 Million Transformed by BRILHO Programme

Since its inception in 2019, the BRILHO Programme has fundamentally reshaped the energy landscape in Mozambique, delivering clean and affordable power to more than 3.1 million people. This landmark initiative, backed by UK and Swedish foreign aid and implemented by the SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, has successfully targeted off-grid populations across all 11 provinces, fostering significant social and economic development.

Strategic Implementation and Technological Reach

The programme’s success lies in its multi-faceted approach to energy solutions. By catalysing the market for off-grid technologies, BRILHO facilitated the widespread adoption of solar home systems (SHS), improved cookstoves, and green mini-grids. This diverse energy mix has empowered households, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and public institutions, providing a reliable alternative to traditional and often harmful energy sources like charcoal and firewood.

Empowering Communities and Fueling Economic Growth

The impact of reliable energy access extends far beyond simple illumination. For communities, it means safer and healthier living conditions due to reduced indoor air pollution from traditional cooking methods. For businesses, consistent power unlocks new opportunities for growth, increases productivity, and lowers operational costs. Public services have also seen marked improvements, with schools and health clinics now able to operate more effectively, supporting better educational and healthcare outcomes for millions of Mozambicans.

A Sustainable Blueprint for the Future

BRILHO’s emphasis on renewable energy not only addresses immediate energy needs but also contributes to Mozambique’s long-term climate resilience. By promoting clean technologies, the initiative has helped curb carbon emissions and reduce deforestation, safeguarding the nation’s natural resources. The programme’s achievements serve as a powerful and replicable model, demonstrating how strategic investment in off-grid renewables can effectively combat energy poverty and lay the groundwork for a more sustainable and prosperous future.
