Energy Heroes Award 2025 Shortlist: 5 Remarkable Innovations

The Energy Heroes Awards 2025 shortlist has been announced, showcasing outstanding contributions to the energy sector. Hosted by the Energy Institute, the awards underscore remarkable achievements in safety, environment, and innovation.

Celebrating Excellence at the Energy Heroes Award 2025

The Energy Heroes Awards, previously known as the Safety and Environment Awards, honour initiatives and individuals that have made significant impacts in the energy sector. The awards feature categories such as the Safety Award, Environment Award, and Innovation Award, recognising projects and people that have enhanced safety, environmental performance, and introduced groundbreaking technologies.

The Safety Award highlights significant improvements in process or personal safety, recognising initiatives that have led to increased safety awareness or advancements in safety technology. The Environment Award celebrates efforts that have reduced the environmental impact of energy activities, including projects promoting sustainable development or environmental management systems. The Innovation Award showcases groundbreaking technologies or processes that have enhanced safety or environmental performance in the energy sector.

Energy Heroes Award 2025 Shortlisted Projects and Initiatives

The shortlist for the 2025 awards includes a diverse range of projects from companies like bp, Centrica, NTPC, Shell, TotalEnergies, and Wood. These projects span various energy sectors and have demonstrated exceptional outcomes.

bp’s Midway Sunset Cogeneration Facility was shortlisted for its innovative thermal imaging system in the Safety category. This system integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) to monitor the health of transformers and prevent overheating, enhancing safety with real-time data and automated alerts for timely maintenance.

Shell and Wood have also made the shortlist with their ‘All Life Matters’ initiative, a collaborative effort to improve safety across their operations. This initiative focuses on enhancing safety culture and implementing best practices to ensure the well-being of employees and contractors.

The Environment Award category features projects such as Centrica’s innovative approach to recycling wind turbine blades. This initiative addresses the growing challenge of managing decommissioned wind turbine blades by developing a sustainable recycling process that reduces waste and promotes circular economy principles.

NTPC’s Darlipali Super Thermal Power Project was also shortlisted in the Environment category for its implementation of 100% Dry Fly Ash Disposal. This project has significantly reduced the environmental impact of fly ash, a byproduct of coal-fired power plants, by ensuring complete utilisation and preventing air and water pollution.

Innovation and Sustainability at the Energy Heroes Award 2025

In the Innovation Award category, TotalEnergies’ Climate, Nature, and Environment (CNE) team was recognised for their groundbreaking work in integrating environmental and nature-based solutions into energy projects. Centrica’s wind turbine blade recycling initiative was also shortlisted in this category, highlighting its dual impact on both innovation and environmental sustainability.

Lili Hargaden, chair of the judging panel, expressed admiration for the shortlisted projects. “The judges were truly impressed by the innovative and impactful nature of the shortlisted projects. These initiatives not only demonstrate significant advances in safety, environment, and innovation but also set a benchmark for the energy industry,” she said.

The Energy Hero of the Year award recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the energy sector. This year’s contenders include Danielle Stewart from Shell, who has been instrumental in driving safety and environmental initiatives across the company’s operations. Her leadership and dedication have led to significant improvements in safety culture and environmental performance.

Matthew Griggs, also from Shell, is recognised for his role in developing and implementing innovative safety systems that have enhanced operational efficiency and reduced risks. His work has been pivotal in advancing safety technologies and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.

The Energy Heroes Awards 2025 highlight the dedication and innovation of companies and individuals working towards a more sustainable and safer energy sector. The winners will be announced at the Energy Institute’s International Energy Week, showcasing the best of what the energy industry has to offer. These awards not only celebrate achievements but also inspire future advancements in safety, environment, and innovation.
