800 MWh of Estonia Renewable Energy Capacity Progressed
Estonia is advancing its renewable energy landscape as part of a broader effort in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), with approximately 800 MWh of capacity reported across Romania, Estonia, Lithuania, and Finland. The specific project in Estonia is the Zirgu battery storage system located in Tsirguliina, Valga County. This system will have a capacity of 100 MW / 200 MWh and is anticipated to begin commissioning in April 2027.
The Zirgu project will utilize battery storage units from LG Energy Solution, which are manufactured in Poland. Construction of the facility commenced in February, aligning with Estonia’s renewable energy expansion goals.
Regional Context of Estonia Renewable Energy Battery Storage Developments
This development comes amid increased activity in CEE’s battery energy storage market. In Bulgaria, two separate projects of approximately 600 MWh each were completed recently, indicating a surge in investment across the region. The advancement of battery storage technology is seen as crucial for integrating renewable energy sources and enhancing grid stability.
