Elia, the Belgian transmission system operator, awarded the contract for this ambitious project, with Corsica Sole managing development and RWE overseeing battery operations. The initiative received crucial support from Banque des Territoires, the regional investment fund W.IN.G, and the Belgian company SOCOFE.

Simultaneously, another landmark project developed by ENGIE and Sungrow in Vilvoorde has connected its first 400 MWh phase to the grid. This battery energy storage system (BESS) is part of an even larger 200 MW/800 MWh plan, positioning it as one of mainland Europe’s most significant storage installations.

Pascal Pierre, CEO and Co-founder of Corsica Sole, emphasized this role, stating, “This project will enable us to accelerate the energy transition by storing renewable energy and providing flexibility to the electricity grid.” The ENGIE project in Vilvoorde echoes this sentiment, with its completed system expected to power up to 96,000 households, demonstrating the tangible impact of such infrastructure.

These efforts are supported by significant government commitment. In March, the Belgian government announced a โ‚ฌ1.5 billion investment in energy storage over the next five years, signaling a clear strategy to build a more resilient and sustainable energy future.
