Europe Packaging Manufacturing Plants Adopts Solar

Global packaging leader Ardagh Group is advancing its comprehensive decarbonization strategy by deploying on-site photovoltaic systems at key manufacturing facilities across Europe. This initiative is a critical component of the company’s ambition to operate on 100% renewable electricity by 2030, significantly reducing its carbon footprint and dependency on the traditional power grid.

The latest milestone in this green transition is the commissioning of a 1.75 MWp solar array at the Ardagh Glass Packaging (AGP) plant in Irvine, Scotland. Developed in collaboration with ESB Energy, the rooftop installation features 3,842 solar panels spread across two warehouse roofs. This system is projected to generate 1,584 MWh of clean energy annually, satisfying approximately 25% of the facility’s electricity requirements.

Graeme Shepherd, Director of the Irvine plant, highlighted the project’s local impact. “This solar installation is a significant step towards improving Irvine’s operational sustainability and lowering its reliance on the grid for electricity,” he stated. “It demonstrates our dedication to decarbonising the glass containers we make while upholding the greatest standards of excellence and quality.” Pat Fenlon, Executive Director of Customer Solutions at ESB Energy, added that their partnership ensures the system’s peak performance through continuous monitoring, allowing Ardagh to focus on its core mission of emissions reduction.

This solar initiative in Scotland follows the successful launch of extensive solar projects at three of Ardagh’s facilities in the Netherlands. In Dongen, Moerdijk, and Oss, the company has installed over 24,700 solar panels, collectively producing an estimated 12,677 MWh per year. The largest of these is the Dongen plant, which combines rooftop and ground-mounted arrays to generate 8,000 MWh annually. The rooftop systems at Moerdijk and Oss contribute 1,897 MWh and 2,500 MWh, respectively. These Dutch projects were developed with power provider Eneco and solar adviser Zoncoalitie.

Annelene Ikemann, Sustainability Director at AGP-Europe, emphasized the cumulative effect of these installations on the company’s sustainability goals. “The Irvine installation is another accomplishment in our decarbonisation strategy,” she explained. “It is one of three on-site solar projects developed by AGP-Europe that, when combined, are expected to replace more than 12,000 MWh of grid electricity and prevent the release of around 5,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.”
