Fijian Schools Get Renewable Energy From Australian Fund

Students across Fiji’s remote island communities are set to gain reliable, clean power for their classrooms, thanks to a new partnership under the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP). The initiative aims to replace polluting diesel generators with sustainable solar energy, transforming educational opportunities for future generations.

The Australian Government is collaborating with the Its Time Foundation on the Off-Grid Renewable Energy Partnership, committing A$210,000 towards the project. The foundation will contribute the remaining A$68,000, bringing the total investment to A$278,000 (approximately $417,924 FJD). This venture is part of the broader Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership (PCIFP), implemented through the Business Partnerships Platform (BPP) to foster climate investments across the region.

Pilot Project Demonstrates Scalable Success: Fijian Schools Get Renewable Energy From Australian Fund

A high-quality solar installation at Buakonikai Primary School on Rabi Island will serve as the initiative’s model. Building on the Its Time Foundation’s experience installing 30 previous solar power systems, this project will provide 24/7 clean energy to the school and adjacent teachers’ homes. The pilot has already demonstrated significant benefits, saving the school over AUD 6,000 in annual fuel costs that can now be reinvested into educational resources. The system’s design emphasizes high-quality installation and remote monitoring to minimize future maintenance and establish a self-sustaining funding model that can be scaled to other schools throughout Fiji and the Pacific.

Enhancing Education and Climate Resilience: Fijian Schools Get Renewable Energy From Australian Fund

This program is a key component of Australia’s commitment to climate action in the Pacific. By delivering reliable electricity, the project closes a critical technology and energy gap. Rob Edwards OAM, Founder of Its Time Foundation, highlighted the project’s impact: “This will enable children and young people in remote communities to access all the benefits of a modern education that increasingly relies on computers and other electronic resources, while improving the quality of life for the wider community and reducing carbon emissions.”

The initiative targets 30-31 schools in locations including the Viti Levu mainland and the outer islands of Rabi, Taveuni, Kadavu, Moala, and the Yasawas. It is the first Off-Grid Renewable Energy Partnership for Fiji, following successful launches in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, and aligns with broader Australian commitments like the AUD 10.8 million contribution to Fiji’s Rural Electrification Fund.
