In 2024, Germany was on track to become Europe’s first country to achieve 100 GW of solar capacity. By the end of Q1 2025, updated figures from the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) show the nation reached an impressive 94.6 GW, according to PVKnowhow.
Despite this significant milestone, solar energy’s share of the overall electricity mix is projected to decrease. This trend is attributed to rising electricity consumption and shifts in government policies, complicated by a decline in monthly solar installations, which fell from 1,113 MW in February to 787 MW in March 2025.
Factors Influencing Germany’s Solar Energy Mix
Even with the challenges of rising electricity demand and evolving government policies, Germany underscored its commitment to renewable energy by adding a record 14.1 GW of solar power in 2024. Maintaining this growth is crucial, as the country aims to triple its annual solar expansion target to 22 GW by 2026. More details on Germany’s solar additions in Q1 2025 are available from PVKnowhow.
