Getinge Achieves 99.9% Renewable Energy Solar Panels: A Stunning Milestone
In a significant move for corporate environmental responsibility, medical technology leader Getinge has announced that its production facility in Halland, Sweden, is now powered almost entirely by renewable energy, achieving a 99.9% green energy mix. The milestone, confirmed in a June 24, 2025 press release, is propelled by a strategic combination of on-site solar generation and partnerships with local renewable producers, underscoring the company’s commitment to its climate goals.
A Hybrid Strategy for Maximum Impact
The cornerstone of this achievement is a new rooftop solar installation spanning 3,000 square meters. Commissioned in May 2024, the solar array is projected to generate 454 MWh in its first year, covering approximately 12% of the facility’s annual electricity consumption. This on-site production is augmented by a 2021 power purchase agreement (PPA) with the nearby Susedalen solar park. Together, these local sources fulfill 55% of the plant’s power needs.
Comprehensive Commitment to Decarbonization
To reach the near-total renewable threshold, Getinge complements its local generation with the purchase of renewable energy backed by guarantees of origin, a practice the company initiated in 2017. Anna Runa Kristinsdottir, the facility’s Environmental Manager, emphasized the success of combining on-site power generation with strong local partnerships. The only remaining fossil fuel usage at the site is minimal oil required for the maintenance of backup power generators.
Aligning with Broader Climate Goals
This initiative is a critical component of Getinge’s broader strategy to reduce its carbon footprint. The company is also transitioning its vehicle fleet to electric and hybrid models, installing charging stations for employees, and plans to introduce an electric forklift. These efforts demonstrate a holistic approach to sustainability that extends beyond just electricity consumption. As the global push for cleaner industrial processes intensifies, Getinge’s model provides a powerful example of what is achievable.
