Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has issued a call for bids for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of a 15-megawatt peak (MWp) solar PV system which includes 22 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage for the Linden isolated system.
Guyana Deploys Solar projects with Norway Funds
This initiative is financed by the $220.8 million Guyana received for forest climate services through its partnership with Norway. It includes an 8MWp solar system with 12MWh of battery storage for the isolated Essequibo coast and a 10MWp solar system for the interconnected Demerara-Berbice network in Berbice.
President Irfaan Ali announced at a press conference that the procurement process for the utility-scale solar project in Linden, Guyana is progressing.
This development is part of a larger $83.3 million initiative under the Guyana Utility-Scale Photovoltaic Programme (GUYSOL), designed to enhance clean energy nationwide.

“Contracts for Berbice and Essequibo are already secured, and the procurement process for Linden is progressing,” Ali stated.
$38M Solar Project to Boost Guyana’s Energy
In March, contracts valued at $38 million were signed to acquire 18 MWp of solar PV system to enhance sustainable energy infrastructure in Regions Two, Five and Six. The project, with an 18-month timeline, is being executed by a joint venture between SUMEC Complete Equipment and Engineering Company Limited and XJ Group Corporation.
Additionally, $850,000 was allocated to train women and people with disabilities in solar installation, further promoting social and economic development.
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) which manages the funds stated that these solar projects will greatly reduce CO2 emissions, decrease electricity costs and aid Guyanaโs shift to renewable energy sources.
โThese projects will provide affordable and clean energy to areas such as Linden and Berbice,โ said Ali.
Guyana’s Solar Initiative to Benefit 70,000 People
The initiative is projected to provide cheap and clean energy to 27,000 households, benefiting over 70,000 people. In a few years, Guyana will have 14 solar farms and 28 solar mini-grids with a total installed capacity of 39 megawatts (MW).
